Is there a generic of Erbitux?

Erbitux is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company. There is currently no generic alternative available.

What is Erbitux?

Erbitux is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat certain types of colorectal cancer. It may also be used to treat certain types of head and neck cancer. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors. The active ingredient in this medication is cetuximab, which works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Erbitux is given by injection into a vein, usually once weekly or every 2 weeks, by a healthcare professional. The first dose, known as the loading dose, is larger and given over two hours. All other doses are smaller and are given over a period of one hour. Your doctor may also administer diphenhydramine before you receive Erbitux to lessen the chance of side effects.

A healthcare professional should observe you for at least one hour after your infusion to ensure that you do not have an infusion reaction. Talk to your doctor directly for more information about this medication. Before taking Erbitux, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medical history. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to mouse protein or red meat, or if you have ever been bitten by a tick. You will need frequent medical tests while you take Erbitux and for at least 8 weeks after the last dose.

What are the side effects of Erbitux?

Common side effects resulting from the use of Erbitux include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, stomach aches, joint pain, fever, chills, trouble sleeping, weight loss, fatigue, weakness, drowsiness, eye redness or itching, dry skin, and mouth sores. Nausea and vomiting may be quite severe. Your doctor may need to arrange separate drug therapy to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting. Not eating before treatment may help relieve vomiting.

An acne-like rash may occur. Based on the severity of the rash, your doctor may delay your treatment, lower your dose, or stop treatment entirely.

Tell your healthcare provider immediately if during the infusion you feel feverish, dizzy, itchy, or short of breath. This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
