What is Gilotrif?
Gilotrif is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat non-small cell lung cancer, the most common form of lung cancer. Gilotrif is prescribed when the cancer cells test positive for one of two genetic mutations. Gilotrif is also used to treat non-small cell lung cancer when it has metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body after platinum-based drugs have not worked.
The active ingredient in Gilotrif, afatinib, belongs to a class of anti-cancer drugs called tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Afatinib works by blocking proteins, tyrosine kinases, that signal cells to divide and produce new cells. It's believed that these proteins are overactive in cancer cells—essentially stuck in the “on” position. Blocking this protein slows or stops the growth of tumors.
Gilotrif is taken as a tablet twice a day until adequate progression is made against cancer or until side effects become too severe.
What are the side effects of Gilotrif?
Common side effects of Gilotrif include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lowered appetite, weight loss, dry skin, mouth sores, chapped lips, blisters, pimples, swelling of the cornea, and hand-foot skin reaction (a dose-dependent condition involving stinging, tingling, pain, dry skin, cracked skin, thickened skin, swelling, and blistering on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet).
Severe side effects include lung disease and liver problems. Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and talk to your doctor immediately.
