Euflexxa is a brand-name injectable medication that helps to treat pain in people with osteoarthritis of the knee. Euflexxa comes in the form of an injection. As a viscosupplementation agent, it is prescribed for persons with knee pain caused by osteoarthritis and is usually given to patients who did not respond well to other treatments.
Euflexxa is similar to a fluid produced by the body, surrounding the joint. This injectable medicine works by lubricating joints in the body, thus allowing free and less painful movement. Your healthcare provider will directly inject Euflexxa into your knee joint. Euflexxa is usually injected into the affected joint on a weekly basis for three weeks.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had an allergic reaction to sodium hyaluronate. Avoid activities that will put extra strain on your knees for 48 hours after injection with Euflexxa, including physical activity or standing for more than one hour at a time. Euflexxa is not approved for people younger than 18 years of age.
Some but not all common side effects of Euflexxa include headache, nausea, stomach pain, trouble walking, swelling in the hands and feet, numbness and tingling, and dizziness. You may also have back, muscle, or joint pain. Pain, swelling, redness, warmth, stiffness, or bruising in the injected area may occur.
An allergic reaction to Euflexxa is rare but seek emergency medical care if you experience hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information, questions, and medical advice about side effects.
Euflexxa typically lasts up to 6 months, but it’s important to get all 3 injections to get the full benefit from this medication.
After a Euflexxa injection, avoid physical activity for two days (48 hours). Do not stand on your feet for more than one hour for the first two days.
Apply ice to the knee if you have pain or swelling. However, if you have joint, back, muscle, or limb pain or swelling, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice. Even if you have discomfort after the first injection, you should still get all three injections to experience maximum pain relief.
