Feraheme is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Inc. There is currently no generic alternative available.
Feraheme is a type of iron replacement medication used to treat iron deficiency anemia, which is a lack of red blood cells caused by having too little iron in the body. Feraheme injection is used in patients with chronic kidney disease, or in people unable to take oral iron. Iron is an important part of your red blood cells and is needed to carry oxygen throughout the body. This medication works by replenishing the body's supply of iron.
Feraheme is available in the form of an intravenous solution. This medication is given by a slow injection into a vein over at least 15 minutes. It is done by a healthcare professional in a medical setting. Treatment involves taking two doses, given three to eight days apart. It may be given during dialysis treatment.
You may need to undergo frequent medical tests to help your doctor determine how long to treat you with Feraheme.
Treatment with Feraheme may cause unwanted side effects such as headache, nausea, dizziness, low blood pressure, tiredness, diarrhea, back pain, or swelling of the arms and legs. Pain, swelling, and redness may also occur at the injection site. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. Feraheme has a boxed warning, which is the strongest warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Serious and fatal allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred in people taking Feraheme. Initial symptoms may include low blood pressure, fainting, unresponsiveness, and sudden loss of breathing. Feraheme should be infused by a healthcare professional over at least 15 minutes, and additional healthcare professionals and medications should be nearby in case of anaphylaxis. Patients should be observed (and blood pressure and pulse should be monitored) while receiving Feraheme and for at least 30 minutes after the infusion.
Seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.
Get professional medical advice, drug interactions, and additional information about Feraheme from your doctor or healthcare provider as this is not a complete list of side effects. Before taking Feraheme, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and history, as well as all of the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements.
