What is Firmagon?

Firmagon is a brand-name prescription medicine that is used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. It is a man-made protein that works by decreasing the amount of testosterone in the body, which the tumor needs to grow. Firmagon is a member of the GnRH receptor antagonists drug class. It is not known if this medication is safe for use by children and women. Firmagon is provided by a doctor and typically not available at pharmacies like Walgreens, Krogers, and CVS pharmacy.

Do not use Firmagon if you are allergic to any of its ingredients including degarelix acetate.

Before taking Firmagon, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, if you have a liver or kidney disease, or if you have a history of long QT syndrome, congestive heart failure, or an electrolyte imbalance. You also need to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements.

Only use Firmagon as prescribed by your doctor. Firmagon is usually injected under the skin around your stomach. Your doctor will administer this injection once every 28 days.

After you have received your Firmagon injection, you should avoid wearing a belt, tight clothing, or waistbands.

What are the side effects of Firmagon?

Common side effects of Firmagon include pain, swelling, or redness at your injection site, hot flashes, weight changes, abnormal liver function tests, high blood pressure, and tiredness. Firmagon may cause infertility.

If you get blurred vision, sudden dizziness, shortness of breath, severe headache, or pounding heartbeat, you should contact your doctor immediately.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, rash, itching, red, peeling or blistered skin, trouble breathing, chest tightness, or swelling of your face, lips, throat, and/or tongue, get immediate medical attention.
