Hiprex is a brand-name prescription antibiotic used to prevent recurring bacterial bladder and urinary tract infections. The active ingredient in Hiprex is called methenamine hippurate. When methenamine is introduced into an acidic environment, such as urine in the bladder, it turns into formaldehyde, a bactericide which can kill bacteria. Hiprex will not effectively treat an active bladder infection. However, taken as a tablet twice daily, Hiprex stops bacterial infections from taking hold in the urinary tract in patients who suffer repeated bladder infections.
Hiprex does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Take Hiprex as directed by your doctor. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medicine, even if you feel better, unless directed to do so by your doctor. If you skip doses or do not take the full course of therapy, the medication will not work as well, and the bacteria may become resistant.
While medicines may have side effects, many people experience minimal side effects with Hiprex. The most common side effects of Hiprex are nausea, upset stomach, painful urination, and altered liver function tests.
Hiprex allergies are rare. Allergic reactions include skin rash and hives.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
