Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. This drug is usually used to treat urinary tract infections and belongs to the urinary anti-infectives drug class. Nitrofurantoin essentially works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Women who are in the final two to four weeks of pregnancy, people with severe kidney disease, or those with a history of jaundice or liver problems should also not take Nitrofurantoin.

Some of the common allergic reactions of Nitrofurantoin include, but are not limited to, changes in facial skin color, chest pain, chills, cough, fever, general feeling of discomfort or illness, hives, hoarseness, itching, joint or muscle pain, shortness of breath, skin rash, sudden trouble in swallowing or breathing, swelling of the face, mouth, hands, or feet, and troubled breathing.
