What is Hydroxyurea?

Hydroxyurea is a generic prescription drug that is used to treat a certain type of leukemia (chronic myeloid leukemia), head and neck cancers, and melanoma (cancer of pigment-creating cells in the skin, eye, or intestines). It is sometimes used off-label for recurrent or inoperable ovarian cancer.

Hydroxyurea blocks the ability of cancer cells to create DNA, so they eventually die off without producing new cancer cells. In addition, Hydroxyurea prevents cancer cells from repairing DNA damage caused by radiation therapy or chemotherapy, making it less likely for cancer cells to rebound from those therapies.
