Hyosyne is a generic prescription drug used along with other drugs to relieve spasms, pain, and excessive secretions by relaxing the smooth muscles responsible for those symptoms. It comes in elixir and drops formats for patients who are not able to swallow a pill, such as infants.
Hyosyne is prescribed to patients with problems that involve intestinal spasms, such as diarrhea, dysentery, and enterocolitis (inflammation of the inner lining of the intestines). Hyosyne relaxes the muscles in the intestines and reduces the frequency and strength of intestinal contractions. In drops format, Hyosyne can be used to relieve infant colic.
For patients with stomach ulcers, Hyosyne reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces by relaxing the muscles in the glands that produce acid.
Hyosyne relieves pain associated with kidney stones (renal colic) or gallstones (biliary colic). Hyosyne also helps patients who have lost bladder control., Hyosyne reduces the pressure in those organs. Finally, Hyosyne reduces secretions that cause runny nose and nasal irritation.
The active ingredient in Hyosyne, hyoscyamine, belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergic drugs. These drugs interfere with a chemical, acetylcholine, that signals muscles to contract. Hyoscyamine relaxes the muscles found in the stomach, intestines, bladder, nasal glands, blood vessels, gall bladder, kidneys, and other areas in the body.
Hyosyne is taken as one or two tablets every 12 hours. Hyosyne is not approved by the FDA as safe and effective.
Although not a complete list, common side effects of Hyosyne include dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, bloating, decreased sweating, decreased urination, dry mouth, stomach pain, constipation, headache, insomnia, loss of taste, heart palpitations, blurred vision, reduced lactation, and impotence.
Allergic reactions to Hyosyne are rare but include rashes, hives, swelling, and trouble breathing. Discontinue use of Hyosyne if you experience an allergic reaction, severe abdominal pain, or chest pain.
Mental and mood changes are serious reactions and include anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, and unusual thoughts. Older patients are particularly vulnerable to mental and mood changes when taking Hyosyne.
