Jakafi is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat myelofibrosis and polycythemia vera, both cancers of the bone marrow. Jakafi is also used to treat acute graft versus host disease (GVHD), a condition in which bone marrow tissues transplanted into another person start aggressively producing white blood cells that attack the host's healthy tissues. Myelofibrosis is a rare bone marrow cancer that compromises the bone marrow's ability to make red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, the cells that cause blood clotting. As a result, the patient becomes anemic, loses the ability to fight off infections, and loses the ability to form blood clots. Polycythemia vera is cancer that causes bone marrow to produce too many red blood cells, which make the blood too thick as well as vulnerable to blood clots. The active ingredient in Jakafi, ruxolitinib, belongs to a class of anti-cancer drugs called kinase inhibitors. Ruxolitinib blocks proteins that, among other things, signal cells to divide and produce more cells. It's believed that these proteins, kinases, become overactive in cancer cells. Blocking this protein slows or stops the growth of tumors. It also stops transplanted bone marrow from overproducing white blood cells that target host tissues in graft versus host disease. Jakafi is taken as a tablet twice a day. The dose will vary.
