What is Letairis?

Letairis is a brand-name prescription drug that treats high blood pressure in the lung's arteries, called pulmonary hypertension. Blood vessels in the lung become tight and stiff because of changes in the cells that line them. Pulmonary hypertension can be a progressive and eventually fatal disease. Letairis belongs to a class of drugs called vasodilators that relax blood vessel muscles. Letairis blocks a protein that is responsible for tightening blood vessels. When the muscles relax, the blood vessels widen and blood pressure goes down. Because Letairis causes serious birth defects if taken by pregnant women, female patients cannot fill a Letairis prescription until they have been accepted in the Letairis REMS program. The prescribing physician will help enroll the patient in the program and provide information about the program and its prescription procedures. The prescribing physician will also enroll all patients in Letairis patient support, LEAP, which will enroll them in the Letairis Co-Pay Savings Coupon and give them access to help in filling their prescription and dealing with insurance. Once enrolled, the patient or patient's caregiver will consult by phone with a case manager and a pharmacist from the pharmacy certified by the ambrisentan manufacturers. Only after these consultations will the prescription be sent by overnight courier to the patient. Letairis prescriptions are filled by local pharmacies only for men.

What are the side effects of Letairis?

Letairis and its active ingredient, ambrisentan, are considered high-risk medications because they consistently cause serious birth defects and fetal death. Women who can get pregnant must use two forms of birth control throughout treatment and at least one month after treatment has ended. Common side effects include, but are not limited to, sinus pain, runny nose, stuffy nose, headache, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, fast heartbeat, swelling, weight gain, sore throat, decreased sperm counts, and flushing. Letairis may have serious side effects, including anemia and liver problems. It is important that you consult regularly with the pharmacist, case manager, and your physician about any and all side effects. Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling and trouble breathing. However, a normal side effect of Letairis is swelling of the feet and hands, so watch for swelling of the face or other parts of the body as an allergic reaction.
