Opsumit (macitentan) is a brand-name prescription drug that treats high blood pressure in the lung's arteries, called pulmonary hypertension. Opsumit reduces blood pressure in the lungs by relaxing the muscles of arteries in the lung. This increases the width of the arteries and so decreases blood pressure. Opsumit retails for $17,832.4, but it is only available at local pharmacies for men. Because of its potential for serious birth defects, female patients must first enroll in the Opsumit REMS program. The prescription is filled by a certified pharmacy approved by Opsumit manufacturer and sent by overnight courier to the patient. Currently, the price of Opsumit with your SingleCare discount card is $12,685.62, but you should ask the case manager or pharmacist at the certified pharmacy if SingleCare discount cards are accepted.

Opsumit is very expensive, so the copay costs can vary dramatically between insurance plans. Even with insurance, you should ask the case manager or pharmacist at the certified pharmacy to compare your copay cost to Opsumit cost, currently $12,685.62 with a SingleCare Opsumit coupon.
Opsumit is usually covered by Medicare insurance plans, both Advantage and Part D, but copay costs can be very high. For women, Opsumit is dispensed only through certified Opsumit REMS pharmacies, so consult with the certified pharmacy's pharmacist or case manager about your Medicare plan as well as using the SingleCare Opsumit coupon, which currently reduces the cost of Opsumit to $12,685.62.

Opsumit is a brand-name prescription drug that treats high blood pressure in the lung's arteries, a condition called pulmonary hypertension. Blood vessels in the lung become tight and stiff because of changes in the cells that line them. Pulmonary hypertension can be a progressive and eventually fatal disease.
Opsumit belongs to a class of drugs called vasodilators that relax blood vessel muscles. Opsumit blocks a protein, called an endothelin receptor, that is primarily found on the walls of blood vessels and airways in the lungs. This protein is responsible for tightening the muscles in the lung's blood vessels. By blocking this protein, the muscles in the blood vessels in the lungs relax, the blood vessels get wider, and blood pressure goes down.
Because Opsumit causes serious birth defects if taken by pregnant women, female patients cannot fill a Opsumit prescription until they have been accepted in the Opsumit REMS program. The prescribing physician and the pharmacy must also be approved and enrolled in this program. The prescribing physician or the clinic's staff will help enroll the patient in the program and provide information about the program and its prescription procedures.
Once enrolled, the patient or patient's caregiver will consult by phone with a case manager and a pharmacist from the pharmacy certified by the Actelion, the Opsumit manufacturer. Only after these consultations will the prescription be sent by overnight courier to the patient.
Opsumit is taken as a tablet once daily.
Opsumit and its active ingredient, macitentan, are considered high-risk medications because they consistently cause serious birth defects and fetal death. Women who can get pregnant must use two forms of birth control throughout treatment and at least one month after treatment has ended. All women prescribed Opsumit will be given a pregnancy test before being prescribed Opsumit, every month while taking Opsumit, and at least one month after discontinuing Opsumit.
Common side effects include, but are not limited to, cold symptoms, bronchitis, flu, urinary tract infection, swelling, and headache. Opsumit may have serious side effects, including anemia and liver problems (including liver failure). It is important that you consult regularly with the pharmacist, case manager, and your physician about any and all side effects. Allergic reactions are rare.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your physician about any concerns you may have with side effects.
