What is Lithobid?

Lithobid is a brand-name extended-release prescription drug used to treat manic and hypomanic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive disorder. Mania is a hyper-excited mental state characterized by high energy, hyperactivity, sleeplessness, rapid speech, grandiosity, disorganized or racing thoughts, aggressiveness, irritability, bad judgment, and risky or self-destructive behaviors. Hypomania is a less excited form of mania.

Lithobid stabilizes mood only in one out of three patients. No-one really understands how the active ingredient in Lithobid, lithium carbonate, works to stabilize mood and why it doesn't work in some patients.
