Rivastigmine is a generic prescription drug that treats confusion (dementia) in patients diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Rivastigmine blocks the chemicals that break down acetylcholine, an important chemical that passes signals between nerve cells in the brain. The increase in acetylcholine slightly improves memory and awareness.
However, Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that cannot be stopped or cured. Rivastigmine only provides a temporary improvement – a few weeks or months – in the person's ability to function. Improvement in memory and awareness is very small and may not be noticeable in many patients.
Rivastigmine capsules or dissolving tablets are taken twice per day before meals. A Rivastigmine transdermal patch is applied once daily to provide a steady dose delivery of Rivastigmine through the day.
While not a complete list, the most common side effects of Rivastigmine are headache, appetite loss, weight loss, trouble sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, vertigo (spinning sensation), muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, urinary tract infections, and a tired feeling.
The transdermal patch may have minor site reactions such as redness or itching. However, serious side effects, including death, can result from applying a new transdermal patch before removing the old one. Make sure there is one and only one transdermal patch on the body.
Because of the nature of Alzheimer's, mental and mood changes due to Rivastigmine are difficult to identify. Rivastigmine may produce depression or anxiety.
Allergic reactions are rare, but may include severe skin reaction.
