What is Nilutamide?

Nilutamide is a generic prescription drug that treats metastatic prostate cancer in patients who have undergone surgical castration (orchiectomy). Surgical castration is the recommended first-line therapy for metastatic prostate cancer, that is, cancer that has spread from the prostate to the rest of the body.

In prostate cancer, the uncontrolled growth of prostate cancer cells is caused by male hormones attaching to proteins – called androgen receptors – on the surface of the cancer cells that then “signal” them to divide into new cancer cells. Surgical castration removes the primary source of male hormones, significantly lowering the testosterone levels in the body. Nilutamide attaches to the androgen receptors on the cancer cells to prevent the minimal amount of testosterone left in the body from attaching to the cancer cells. Both results – minimizing the amount of testosterone in the body through surgery and Nilutamide's blocking male hormones from attaching to androgen receptors – slows or stops the growth of the tumors.

Nilutamide is taken as two 150 mg tablets daily for the first 30 days and one 150 mg tablet thereafter.

What are the side effects of Nilutamide?

Common side effects of Nilutamide include, but are not limited to, hot flushes, eyesight problems, infections, nausea, shortness of breath, constipation, and dizziness.

Nilutamide is frequently prescribed with leuprolide acetate. Near 100% of patients who take Nilutamide with a leuprolide injection will experience adverse side effects.

Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, including swelling, itching, or rash, and talk to your doctor if you experience what you believe to be an allergic reaction.
