What is the brand name of Octreotide?

Octreotide is sold under the brand names Sandostatin and Sandostatin Lar Depot. Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., Sandoz Inc., and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. are some of the manufacturers of Octreotide.

What is Octreotide?

Octreotide is a synthetic protein that is similar to a hormone naturally produced in the body called somatostatin. Octreotide lowers many substances in the body such as insulin and glucagon (involved in regulating blood sugar), growth hormone, and chemicals that affect digestion.

Octreotide is used to treat acromegaly and to reduce flushing episodes and watery diarrhea caused by cancerous tumors (carcinoid syndrome) or tumors called vasoactive intestinal peptide tumors (VIP adenomas).

Octreotide belongs to the somatostatin and somatostatin analogs drug class. Somatostatin is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus and some other tissues such as the pancreas and the gastrointestinal tract. It inhibits the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary, and insulin and glucagon from the pancreas. Somatostatin also decreases the release of most gastrointestinal hormones and reduces gastric acid and pancreatic secretion. It can reduce abdominal blood flow, therefore, somatostatin analogs can be used to reduce bleeding from esophageal varices.

What are the side effects of Octreotide?

Some—but not all—of the side effects commonly reported with Octreotide use include diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, upset stomach, bloating, gas, headache, dizziness, or pain at the injection site.

Serious allergic reactions to this prescription medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.

Speak with your doctor or healthcare provider for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Octreotide as this is not a complete list of side effects.
