Orphenadrine citrate ER is a prescription muscle relaxant that relieves muscle pain. Patients take a single tablet without regard to food twice daily. As with other muscle relaxants, side effects are common, particularly impairment that interferes with driving or other activities.

How to take Orphenadrine ER

  • Follow all the prescriber’s instructions. Do not use more than directed.

  • Take two doses daily, once in the morning and once at night.

  • The tablets can be taken with or without food.

  • Swallow the extended-release tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it.

  • Store orphenadrine extended-release tablets in a closed container at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Orphenadrine ER

  • Take a dose as soon as you remember. 

  • If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. 

  • Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Orphenadrine ER contraindications

  • This medicine is not safe for everyone. 

  • Do not take orphenadrine if you have had an allergic reaction to orphenadrine or have:

    • Glaucoma

    • Myasthenia gravis

    • Enlarged prostate

    • Bladder blockage

    • Stomach ulcer

    • Upper intestinal blockage

    • Cardio-spasm (inability of the esophagus to pass food to the stomach)

Orphenadrine ER warnings

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using this medicine.

  • The prescriber will need regular visits to monitor the effects of this medicine. Long-term treatment will require regular blood tests. Keep all appointments.

  • Before starting orphenadrine, tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have heart problems.

  • This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.

  • Orphenadrine can lead to drug abuse. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or use orphenadrine for any other purpose than muscle pain.

Orphenadrine ER interactions

  • Before starting orphenadrine, tell the prescriber about all the prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you take, particularly:

  • Tell the prescriber if you regularly use drugs that make you sleepy, such as opioid pain relievers, benzodiazepines, or sleeping pills.

  • Avoid alcohol and cannabis products when taking orphenadrine.

  • Tell other healthcare providers you are using this medicine before they prescribe new medications.

Serious side effects

Talk to a healthcare provider if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Weakness, tremors, or shaking.

  • Palpitations, racing heartbeats

  • Vision changes, eye pain, sensitivity to light

  • Trouble urinating, decreased urination

  • Tremor

  • Confusion, euphoria, agitation, hallucinations (seeing things that are not there).

  • Allergic reaction: Hives, itching, low blood pressure, swelling, faintness, dizziness

Less serious side effects

  • Dry mouth.

  • Dilated pupils

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Headache

  • Blurred vision

  • Constipation

  • Stomach irritation
