Pamelor is an antidepressant that relieves depression, a disorder characterized by sadness, hopelessness, loss of energy, guilt, and loss of interest in daily activities. One cause of depression is a breakdown of nerve signals in the areas of the brain that control mood because of a depletion of chemicals critical to passing signals between nerves: serotonin and norepinephrine.
Pamelor works by preventing these chemicals from being reabsorbed back into nerve cells before they can pass signals between nerves. With nerves in the brain communicating as they should, the brain is better able to regulate mood.
Pamelor is taken as a capsule three to four times a day and typically improves mood in about two weeks.
The most common side effects of Pamelor include, but are not limited to, dry mouth, unusual taste, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, decreased urination, vision changes, breast swelling, ringing in the ears, decreased sex drive, and impotence.
Allergic reactions are extremely rare but include hives, rashes, itching, dizziness, and trouble breathing. Mood changes are more common and include anxiety, restlessness, nervousness, panic, and confusion.
