What is Pegasys?

Pegasys is a prescription drug prescribed to patients with chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C infections and is used in combination with other antiviral drugs. Hepatitis B and C are viruses that infect the liver. Over time, the infection destroys liver cells and leaves scar tissue (cirrhosis). In the most advanced stages of the disease, the liver is too damaged to sustain life. The active ingredient in Pegasys, peginterferon alfa-2a, is an interferon that reduces hepatitis B and C viruses in the body by making the cells in the body resistant to virus infection and activating the immune system to fight off the virus. Pegasys is administered as an injection once per week. While the injection is usually performed by a healthcare professional, Pegasys can be self-administered using the Pegasys ProClick pen injector.

The most serious side effects of Pegasys include low blood cell counts, worsening of autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis), thyroid problems, pancreas problems, and heart problems (such as chest pain). Allergic reactions are possible but rare. Talk to your physician if you experience allergic reactions such as rash, itching, hives, or trouble breathing.
