Perphenazine-Amitriptyline is a generic prescription combination drug that combines an antipsychotic medication (perphenazine) with an antidepressant (amitriptyline hydrochloride). It is prescribed to patients diagnosed with moderate to severe anxiety who also have a depressed mood, to patients diagnosed with depression who have moderate to severe anxiety, to patients who experience both anxiety and depression associated with a chronic physical disease, and to schizophrenic patients who have symptoms of depression.
Perphenazine is an antipsychotic that works by blocking or slowing down signals in the brain by changing the chemistry of the brain. By slowing down certain brain signals, Perphenazine-Amitriptyline reduces or eliminates anxiety or psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations or delusions.
Amitriptyline belongs to a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. These drugs work by restoring a natural chemical balance in the brain, giving patients a greater ability to regulate their mood.
Perphenazine-Amitriptyline is taken as a tablet three to four times daily. More severe conditions, such as a combination of schizophrenia and depression, may require two tablets three to four times a day.
Common side effects of Perphenazine-Amitriptyline are dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, sleep problems, tiredness, trouble moving, headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight gain. More serious side effects include low blood pressure, involuntary movements, tremors, and seizures. Long-term continual use of Perphenazine-Amitriptyline often leads to tardive dyskinesia (unusual twitching and involuntary movements).
Mental and mood changes include anxiety, restlessness, confusion, inability to concentrate, disorientation, and strange dreams.
Allergic reactions are rare, but discontinue Perphenazine-Amitriptyline if there is any sign of an allergic reaction, such as hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your physician about any concerns you may have with side effects.
