What is Phytonadione?
Phytonadione is a naturally-occurring nutrient called vitamin K1. All the K vitamins are critical components of the body's blood-clotting system and work by helping form the proteins (clotting factors) that are the “glue” in blood clots.
Phytonadione is prescribed to people who have problems with blood clotting due to a vitamin K deficiency or conditions that interfere with vitamin K activity. Newborns often do not have enough vitamin K and may be treated with Phytonadione if they have bleeding problems. Other conditions that result in a vitamin K deficiency are mainly intestinal or liver problems, such as obstructive jaundice a condition where bile is stuck in the liver), as well as gluten allergies, colon swelling, and sores, and other intestinal problems.
Various drugs, such as antibacterial drugs and salicylates (aspirin) block the ability of the body to use vitamin K and may require the administration of Phytonadione to prevent blood thinning and bleeding problems.
Phytonadione is administered as an injection or tablet.
