Potassium Iodide is an expectorant medication used to loosen and break up mucus in the airways. This medication is also used along with antithyroid medicines to prepare the thyroid gland for surgical removal, to treat hyperthyroidism, and to protect the thyroid in a radiation exposure emergency. This medication works by helping you to cough up mucus so that you can breathe more easily. It works for thyroid issues by shrinking the size of the thyroid gland and decreasing the amount of thyroid hormones produced.
Potassium Iodide comes in the form of an oral liquid and is usually taken with a full glass of water. To avoid an upset stomach, use this medication after meals or with food. Drink plenty of liquids with this medication unless otherwise directed. This liquid medication may be mixed in water, milk, formula, or juice before taking.
Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not increase your dose, use it more often, or take it for longer than prescribed by your doctor. Doing so may increase the risk of side effects.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects such as burning mouth or throat, sore teeth or gums, swelling inside the mouth, increased saliva, eye irritation, swollen eyelids, severe headache, swelling of the neck, confusion, numbness, or tingling in the feet or hands.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for medical advice about the risks and benefits involved with using Potassium Iodide before you start treatment.
