What is Potassium Iodide?

Potassium Iodide is an expectorant medication used to loosen and break up mucus in the airways. This medication is also used along with antithyroid medicines to prepare the thyroid gland for surgical removal, to treat hyperthyroidism, and to protect the thyroid in a radiation exposure emergency. This medication works by helping you to cough up mucus so that you can breathe more easily. It works for thyroid issues by shrinking the size of the thyroid gland and decreasing the amount of thyroid hormones produced.

Potassium Iodide comes in the form of an oral liquid and is usually taken with a full glass of water. To avoid an upset stomach, use this medication after meals or with food. Drink plenty of liquids with this medication unless otherwise directed. This liquid medication may be mixed in water, milk, formula, or juice before taking.
