What is Probenecid?

Probenecid is a generic prescription drug that reduces uric acid in the bloodstream for gout patients. Gout is an acutely painful arthritic condition in which uric acid builds up in the body. The excess uric acid forms crystals in the joints, particularly the big toe/feet, resulting in intense pain, swelling, and redness.

Probenecid prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing uric acid back into the body, so it passes out with the urine. Probenecid is typically used in combination with colchicine, a prescription drug that reduces the crystals that have formed in the joints.

Sometimes Probenecid is also prescribed with an antibiotic such as pencillin, to make it more effective.

Before taking Probenecid, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and all of the medications you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

What are the side effects of Probenecid?

Probenecid may cause kidney stones. While taking Probenecid, drink plenty of water to help prevent kidney stones.

Other common side effects include, but are not limited to, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea, frequent urination, and sore gums. Probenecid may cause allergic reactions. Watch for skin rashes, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling,  and seek emergency medical care if any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction occur.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult with your prescribing physician and pharmacist about possible side effects before starting on Probenecid.
