What is the brand name of Nifedipine?

Nifedipine is a generic prescription drug. The brand-name version of Nifedipine is Procardia.

What is Nifedipine?

Nifedipine is a generic prescription medicine used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain, also known as angina. This drug belongs to a class of medications known as calcium channel blocks. It works by relaxing blood vessels which allows blood to flow more easily. Nifedipine should be taken regularly for maximum effectiveness. It is not meant to be used to treat sudden attacks of chest pain.

This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet that is usually taken three times a day with or without food or as instructed by your healthcare provider. This medication should be swallowed whole. Do not chew, crush, or break the capsule. Your doctor may start you on a small dose of this medication and slowly increase it over time to avoid the risk of side effects.

Do not take more or less of the recommended dose prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens while taking this medication.

What are the side effects of Nifedipine?

Nifedipine may cause side effects such as flushing, swelling of the ankles or feet, dizziness, weakness, and nausea. Other side effects may include muscle cramps, palpitations, and shortness of breath. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects or they persist or worsen.

While this drug is effective for preventing chest pain, some patients who already have severe heart disease may develop worsening chest pain or a heart attack after starting treatment with this medication or increasing the dose. Seek medical help right away if you experience worsening chest pain or symptoms of a heart attack, such as unusual sweating, pain in the chest, jaw, or upper left arm, or shortness of breath.

Avoid the use of grapefruit or grapefruit juice while using this drug unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Grapefruit can increase blood levels of Nifedipine and increase the risk of side effects from Nifedipine. Nifedipine may also interact with other medications. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Nifedipine as this is not a complete list of side effects. Talk to your doctor about possible drug interactions, allergic reactions, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Nifedipine.
