Rifadin is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Sanofi. The generic version of this drug is rifampin.
Rifadin is an FDA-approved prescription antibiotic used to prevent and treat tuberculosis as well as other bacterial infections. It works by targeting and killing the bacteria that cause infection. This medication only works to treat bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
Rifadin comes in the form of an oral tablet and is best taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water one hour before or two hours after meals. If you have nausea, do not use antacids since it will lessen the effectiveness of Rifadin. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
For maximum effectiveness, use this medication at evenly spaced intervals. Try taking this medication at the same time every day to help yourself remember. Continue using this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if your symptoms go away. Stopping this medication too early may cause bacteria to regrow which may result in a return of the infection.
Common side effects resulting from the use of Rifadin may include upset stomach, loss of appetite, nausea, heartburn, menstrual changes, or headaches. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.
In rare cases, Rifadin may cause serious liver diseases. Combination treatment with other drugs such as isoniazid or pyrazinamide may increase this risk. Tell your doctor right away if you develop symptoms of liver disease, such as persistent nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dark urine, or yellow eyes or skin.
Check with your doctor or healthcare professional for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Rifadin as this is not a complete list of side effects.
