Priftin is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient, rifapentine. There is no generic alternative to Priftin.
Priftin (rifapentine) is a generic antibiotic used to treat mycobacterial infections: tuberculosis, a dangerous lung infection; leprosy, a chronic infection of the skin and nerves; and mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), an infection of the lungs, lymph nodes, and, sometimes, the entire body. Tuberculosis, leprosy, and MAC are extremely difficult and time-consuming to treat.
Rifapentine belongs to a class of antibiotics known as antimycobacterials or rifamycins. Priftin works by interfering with the mycobacteria's ability to form the proteins it needs to function properly.
Because tuberculosis, MAC, and leprosy take months to treat (6-9 for tuberculosis, 6-12 for leprosy, and 12-18 for MAC), multiple drugs are used in sequence to prevent drug resistance.
The most common side effects of Priftin are stomach upset, nausea, decreased appetite, diarrhea, headache, and joint pain. Patients often experience discoloration (red or orange) of the skin, teeth, tongue, urine, saliva, tears, or stools. The most serious side effects of Priftin are liver problems and the lowering of red blood and white blood cell counts.
Allergic reactions are rare but include hives, rashes, itching, and difficulty breathing. Consult a physician immediately if you experience a Priftin allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
