What is Risedronate?

Risedronate is a generic drug prescribed to prevent bone loss in patients with osteoporosis or with conditions that put them at risk for osteoporosis, such as menopause, steroid drugs, or Paget's disease, which is similar to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones lose density and strength and so become vulnerable to fractures (breaks). The body's bones, besides providing structural strength, are also repositories of minerals, such as calcium, that are important to many of the body's functions. It is normal for bone cells, called osteoclasts, to remove calcium and other minerals from the bone. Osteoporosis happens when more minerals are removed from the bones than are replaced.
