What is Actonel?

Actonel is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and people with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. It is also used to treat osteoporosis in men and Paget’s disease. Actonel belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates and works by slowing bone loss, helping to maintain strong bones, and reducing the risk of broken bones or fractures.

Actonel comes in the form of an oral tablet that is usually taken with a full glass of water 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Do not use this medication at bedtime or while you are still in bed. You should avoid lying down for 30 minutes after taking Actonel. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dosage for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.

Do not use calcium or iron supplements at the same time as Actonel as they may interfere with the absorption of Actonel. Actonel should only be taken as prescribed.

Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have or other medications you may be taking before starting treatment with Actonel.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects or if they persist and worsen.

Serious side effects of Actonel include low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia), jaw bone problems, thigh fractures, and irritation, inflammation, or ulcers in the esophagus. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience chest pain, vomiting blood, muscle spasms, numbness or tingling sensations, or severe muscle, joint, or bone pain.
