Winlevi is a topical prescription cream. It contains the active ingredient clascoterone cream. It is FDA-approved to treat acne in adults and adolescents 12 years and older. It is not approved for use in anyone under 12 years old. Winlevi is usually applied topically twice daily to the affected areas. It should not be used in or on the eyes, mouth, or vagina. It is classified as an androgen inhibitor, but the exact way it works on acne is not understood.
Store Winlevi at room temperature, out of reach of children. Throw away any unused cream after 180 days or one month after opening, whichever is sooner.
Avoid using Winlevi on the skin where there are cuts, eczema, or sunburns.
Avoid getting Winlevi cream into the eyes, lips, mouth, corners of the nose, or mucous membranes. If Winlevi comes into contact with mucous membranes, rinse well with water.
While using Winlevi, avoid using other skin products that can cause skin dryness or irritation such as medicated soaps or skincare products that contain alcohol.
The most common side effects of Winlevi include local irritation such as redness, dryness, stinging, burning, itching, local swelling, and streaks.
Serious side effects may occur, including:
Serious local skin reactions
Adrenal insufficiency, a condition where the adrenal glands do not make enough hormones. If you develop adrenal problems, your doctor may advise you to stop treatment with Winlevi cream.
There are no known drug interactions with Winlevi. Still, before taking this medicine, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
People who are allergic to any ingredients in the medication should not use Winlevi. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider.
Winlevi has been approved for all types of acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older. It targets acne hormones in the skin.
