Sulfadiazine is a generic antibiotic that stops the growth of bacterial infections. Sulfadiazine belongs to a class of powerful antibiotics called sulfa or sulfonamide drugs. Sulfadiazine interrupts the chemical process bacteria use to produce folate (vitamin B9), a substance necessary for DNA replication. Without folate, the bacteria are unable to produce new bacteria.
Sulfadiazine is rarely prescribed in the United States because of possible side effects. Doctors will prescribe Sulfadiazine as a second-line treatment if other antibiotics fail to adequately treat middle ear infections, chlamydia, rheumatic fever, chancroids, or infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae bacteria.
However, it is most commonly prescribed with another antibiotic, pyrimethamine, to treat toxoplasmosis, a parasite infection, in patients with AIDS or babies who were born with a toxoplasmosis infection.
Sulfadiazine is taken as a tablet.
The most common side effects of Sulfadiazine are stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, headache, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.
Serious side effects can be severe: anemia, blood problems, blood clotting, thyroid problems (goiter), kidney damage, kidney stones, pancreatitis (swelling of the pancreas), and convulsions. Mental and mood changes are considered serious side effects and include hallucinations and depression.
Allergic reactions are common and can be potentially severe. They include hives, itching, and rash. The most severe allergic reactions are epidermal necrolysis (blistering and cell death of the skin throughout the body) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a severe skin reaction throughout the body). The combination of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and epidermal necrolysis has a 50% fatality rate. Consult a physician immediately if you experience a Sulfadiazine allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
