What is Sulfatrim Pediatric?

Sulfatrim Pediatric is a brand-name combination antibiotic that stops the growth of bacterial infections formulated as a flavored oral suspension for children. It is prescribed to treat middle ear infections, urinary tract infections, shigellosis (an intestinal infection caused by Shigella bacteria), and pneumocystis pneumonia (pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis bacteria).

The active ingredients in Sulfatrim Pediatric, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim, prevent bacteria from making folate, or vitamin B9, a substance that is critical to cellular growth. Without folate, bacteria are unable to make copies of their DNA to produce more bacteria cells.
