It is prescribed to treat middle ear infections, urinary tract infections, shigellosis (an intestinal infection caused by Shigella bacteria), and pneumocystis pneumonia (pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis bacteria).
The active ingredients in Sulfatrim Pediatric, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim, prevent bacteria from making folate, or vitamin B9, a substance that is critical to cellular growth. Without folate, bacteria are unable to make copies of their DNA to produce more bacteria cells.
Sulfatrim Pediatric is taken as a cherry-flavored oral suspension. The dose will depend on the weight of the child as well as the type of bacterial infection being treated. Sulfatrim Pediatric is not prescribed to children under the age of 2 months.
