What is Symtuza?

Symtuza is a combination prescription drug that is used to treat the human immunodeficiency virus- 1 (HIV-1) in adults. This antiretroviral medicine contains darunavir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide. HIV is a disease that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Do not use Symtuza if you are allergic to any of its ingredients (cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide, and darunavir). If you are pregnant do not use Symtuza. If you are taking any medications that contain lurasidone, pimozide, alfuzosin, carbamazepine, dihydroergotamine, dronedarone, ivabradine, ranolazine, colchicine, elbasvir or grazoprevir, do not take Symtuza.

Before taking Symtuza tell your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you may have including Hepatitis B or C, diabetes, kidney problems, or hemophilia, you need to tell your doctor. If you become pregnant while using Symtuza tell your doctor right away. You should not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 as you could infect your baby.

You also need to tell your doctor about all the treatments you are using including all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you are using certain cholesterol-lowering medications like lovastatin, simvastatin, sedatives like midazolam, or triazolam, seizure medications such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, or phenobarbital, opioids, ritonavir, ranolazine, rifampin, sildenafil, or St. John's wort, you need to tell your doctor.

Use Symtuza exactly as it was prescribed by your healthcare provider. Symtuza is usually taken once daily with food. You may need to do liver function tests while using Symtuza and for several months after your last dose. In case of a missed dose, you should get medical advice from your healthcare professional. Do not have unprotected sex or share razors or toothbrushes.

What are the side effects of Symtuza?

Common side effects of Symtuza include gas, rash, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, rash, headache, and changes in the shape and location of your body fat.

Symtuza could also cause serious side effects like swelling in your neck (enlarged thyroid), little or no urination, lactic acidosis, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you have any of these symptoms call your doctor right away.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction after taking Symtuza get immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, throat, and tongue.
