Synarel is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient, nafarelin. Generic Synarel is not available at this time.

What is Synarel?

Synarel is a brand-name prescription drug that treats precocious puberty in boys and girls and endometriosis in women.

Endometriosis is a condition where the inner lining of the uterus, the endometrium, grows on the outside of the uterus. This growth is stimulated by the female hormone estrogen.

Precocious puberty is any onset of puberty in girls 8 years or younger or boys 9 years and younger. It is caused by the release of a hormone, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which stimulates the pituitary gland to release hormones that stimulate the ovaries to produce the female hormone estrogen and the testes to produce the male hormone testosterone.

The active ingredient in Synarel, nafarelin, attaches to the same places in the pituitary gland that gonadotropin-releasing hormone attaches to. After a few weeks, continual intake of nafarelin completely shuts down the production of the hormones produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates sex hormone production, which also shuts down. This stops the development of secondary sexual characteristics in children with precocious puberty and decreases their growth rate to normal levels. The reduction in estrogen stops the growth rate of endometrial tissues on the uterus.

Synarel is administered as a nasal spray, two sprays in each nostril in the morning, and two sprays in each nostril in the evening.

What are the side effects of Synarel?

Common side effects of Synarel include, but are not limited to, nasal irritation, headache, oily skin, acne, runny nose, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, pubic hair growth, changes in breast size, increased body odor, dandruff, and muscle pain. Mental and mood changes include mood swings and depression.
