Updated May 14, 2025  •  Published Dec 30, 2020

Temazepam is a generic prescription sedative that helps people with insomnia go to sleep and remain asleep. As a benzodiazepine, temazepam induces sleep by slowing down nerve activity in the brain. Because of possible side effects and the risk of dependence and addiction, doctors prescribe temazepam for only a few days.
