Velphoro is a brand-name prescription medication. It is manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care North America. There are currently no generic versions of Velphoro available in the United States.
Velphoro is a brand-name, prescription-only chewable tablet used to treat high levels of phosphorous in the blood. It helps patients who are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and are on dialysis.
Velphoro (sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is usually taken with a meal as it is more effective that way. This prescription drug acts like a magnet to pull phosphorus out of the food you consume to control and even lower phosphorus levels in your blood. You must be at least 18 years old to take Velphoro.
Before starting Velphoro, consult your doctor to make sure it is right for you. Tell your doctor if you're pregnant or nursing. Let the doctor know of any medical conditions you may have such as iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis), stomach or intestinal problems, or if you have recently had stomach or intestinal surgery. While taking Velphoro, you may have to do frequent blood tests. Velphoro chewable tablets must be thoroughly chewed or crushed before swallowing—do not swallow whole. Store your Velphoro medication in its original container at room temperature and away from moisture and heat. When not in use, keep the container tightly closed.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets and never share your medication with others. Other drugs can interact with Velphoro, including medicines which are prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform each of your healthcare providers about all the medicines you are using currently and any medicine you may start while using Velphoro.
Do not use this medicine for longer than is recommended. Be sure to only use Velphoro as directed by your doctor. Call the poison control center in case of accidental overdose.
Some common side effects of Velphoro include nausea, diarrhea, and change in taste. Also, your stool might appear black because of the iron content in Velphoro. Staining of the teeth may occur.
Signs of an allergic reaction to Velphoro include rash, swelling of the face, throat, and tongue, itching, trouble breathing, and/or severe dizziness. Get medical help right away if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects associated with taking Velphoro and others may occur while using this medication. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice.
