What is Velphoro?

Velphoro is a brand-name, prescription-only chewable tablet used to treat high levels of phosphorous in the blood. It helps patients who are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and are on dialysis.

Velphoro (sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is usually taken with a meal as it is more effective that way. This prescription drug acts like a magnet to pull phosphorus out of the food you consume to control and even lower phosphorus levels in your blood. You must be at least 18 years old to take Velphoro.

Before starting Velphoro, consult your doctor to make sure it is right for you. Tell your doctor if you're pregnant or nursing. Let the doctor know of any medical conditions you may have such as iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis), stomach or intestinal problems, or if you have recently had stomach or intestinal surgery.
