What is Venclexta?

Venclexta is a brand-name prescription drug that treats chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). For patients newly diagnosed with AML, Venclexta is prescribed with azacitidine, decitabine, or a low dose of cytarabine.

Both CLL and SLL cancers are caused when B-cell lymphocytes mutate and grow uncontrollably. Acute myeloid leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow cells that produce white blood cells, including B-cell lymphocytes. “Acute” means that the cancer is aggressive and has a high risk of spreading throughout the body.

Venclexta blocks a protein that specifically “signals” the B-cells to divide and produce more B-cells.

Venclexta is taken as a tablet once daily with a meal. The dose will start small and ramp up for the first five weeks until the patient is taking the full clinical dose.
