Is there a generic of Zenpep?

Zenpep is a brand-name prescription drug that is manufactured by Allergan Pharmaceuticals.

What is Zenpep?

Zenpep is a prescription drug that can be used by both adults and children who cannot digest food normally because their pancreas does not make enough enzymes. This is due to a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which may be due to cystic fibrosis or other conditions. This drug may help your body use fats, proteins, and sugars from food in a more efficient way. Zenpep is part of the digestive enzymes drug class and the active ingredient, pancrelipase, works by replacing the enzymes your pancreas fails to provide.

Each Zenpep capsule contains a mixture of pancrelipase lipase, protease, and amylase. Taking Zenpep with meals and snacks is essential, so the medication can help you digest your food.

Before using Zenpep, tell your healthcare provider or doctor if you have or had kidney disease, gout, diabetes, a blockage or scarring in your intestines, trouble swallowing pills, or if you are lactose intolerant. Your healthcare provider should also know if you are allergic to pork (pig) products, if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, and whether you are taking non-prescription medicines, vitamins, or herbal supplements.

What are the side effects of Zenpep?

Although this is not the full list of side effects, Zenpep can cause belly pain, gas, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, and fruit-like breath odor. You may also get swollen painful joints caused by an increase of uric acid in the blood. Allergic reactions are rare. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, difficulty breathing, and/or swelling of the face, lips, and tongue. Seek medical care immediately if you notice any of these allergic reaction symptoms. You can also report such side effects to the FDA by calling phone number 1-800-FDA-1088.

Important: Do not crush, chew or hold the Zenpep capsules in your mouth as this may cause irritation or change the way Zenpep works in your body.
