What is Viracept?
Viracept is a brand-name prescription drug used to stop the growth of the virus that causes HIV/AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes HIV/AIDS, is a “retrovirus,” so the active ingredient in Viracept, nelfinavir, belongs to a class of drugs called antiretroviral drugs.
Viracept blocks a protein the HIV virus needs to copy itself, so Viracept reduces the amount of HIV virus in the body. Because the HIV virus attacks and weakens the immune system, reducing the amount of HIV virus strengthens the immune system. gives patients the ability to fight off the illnesses common to HIV/AIDS, such as cancer, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other diseases.
Viracept is taken as a tablet or oral solution two or three times a day. The oral solution is intended for children who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
