Minoxidil is a vasodilator that improves the flow of blood in the body. Minoxidil is used to treat severely high blood pressure that is causing symptoms or damaging your organs. Minoxidil works by widening the blood vessels and thus increases the amount of blood flowing to the heart. Minoxidil is available to consumers in the form of a tablet. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results.
If you miss a dose of Minoxidil, do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use Minoxidil in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended, as it may be dangerous to your health. Contact your doctor for more medical advice.
Minoxidil is usually given together with several other medicines, usually a diuretic and beta-blocker.
It is recommended to weigh yourself every day while you are taking Minoxidil. Your healthcare provider will give you further instructions on what to do if you gain weight, or if you are retaining fluid. You will need to measure your heart rate regularly by checking your pulse while you are resting. Your doctor or healthcare provider can show you how to check your pulse.
Because Minoxidil can potentially cause serious side effects, it should only be used in certain cases, such as people with high blood pressure that has symptoms or is damaging the organs and is not controlled on the highest dose of a diuretic plus two other medications. In studies, Minoxidil reduced diastolic blood pressure by 20 mmHg, or to 90 mmHg or less, in about 75% of patients. Most patients had high blood pressure that was not controlled by other medications.
Some common side effects of Minoxidil include excess hair growth, swelling, fast heart rate, breast tenderness, weight gain, numbness and tingling, and headache.
Some serious side effects of Minoxidil are swelling around the heart, fluid buildup, chest pain, and heart failure.
Get emergency medical help immediately if you have hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, as these may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Get emergency medical help right away if you are experiencing signs of a severe skin reaction, such as fever, burning eyes, sore throat, red or purple rash, or blistering/peeling skin.
Other side effects may occur since this is not a full list of Minoxidil side effects. Before taking Minoxidil, discuss potential side effects with your doctor.
