Lidocaine is the generic version Xylocaine. Oak Pharmaceuticals, Inc. manufactures Xylocaine. Similar brand-name products include Akten, Glydo, and Lidoderm.
Xylocaine is a prescription drug used to prevent and control pain in procedures involving the male and female urethra, for the topical treatment of painful urethritis, and as an anesthetic lubricant for endotracheal intubation (oral and nasal). Xylocaine belongs to the Topical anesthetics drug class and works by numbing the affected area of the skin.
Xylocaine dosages usually depend on the area to be anesthetized, the vascularity of the tissues, individual tolerance, and the technique of anesthesia. The lowest dosage needed to provide numbness in the area is what should be administered. When being administered to children elderly and debilitated patients, dosages of local anesthetics should be reduced. Although the incidence of adverse effects with Xylocaine is quite low, caution should be exercised, particularly when employing large amounts since the incidence of adverse effects is highly dependent on the amount of Xylocaine administered.
Before you use Xylocaine be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all of your drugs you've taken in the past two weeks (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and medical conditions you may have. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take Xylocaine Jelly (lidocaine gel) with all of your drugs and health problems. Once this drug has been prescribed to you, do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
Temporary redness, stinging, and a little bit of swelling may occur at the application site. These side effects usually do not require medical attention, however, If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor right away.
Rarer side effects can include cracked, dry, or scaly skin, fast heartbeat, fever, hives or welts, itching, skin rash, hoarseness, irritation, joint pain, stiffness, or swelling.
There are other side effects that can occur while using Xylocaine, check with your doctor for medical advice on these side effects. You may also report negative side effects to the FDA.
