Yuvafem is a prescription vaginal insert that treats the thinning and drying of vaginal tissues due to menopause. The active ingredient in Yuvafem is estradiol, a natural female sex hormone. Women insert a Yuvafem tablet into the vagina once daily using a prefilled applicator.

What is Yuvafem used for?

Yuvafem is a form of estrogen that relieves vaginal symptoms of menopause such as dryness, burning, and itching.

  • For vaginal atrophy due to menopause: 1, 10 mcg vaginal insert once daily for two weeks followed by 1, 10 mcg vaginal insert twice weekly

How to take Yuvafem

  • Follow all the prescriber’s instructions.

  • Please read the Patient Information sheet that comes with this medicine.

  • Carefully read and follow the Instructions for Use that come with this medicine.

  • Put the Yuvafem tablet only in the vagina. Do not take it by mouth.

  • Use the applicator to insert the tablet. Do not remove the tablet from the applicator.

  • Administering the insert:

    • Wash and dry your hands.

    • Remove one applicator from the sheet.

    • Tear open the pouch and remove the applicator.

    • If the tablet falls out, carefully put it back in the applicator.

    • Stand up or lie down to insert the applicator.

    • Place the applicator halfway into the vagina or as far as it will comfortably go, whichever is less.

    • If the tablet falls out when trying to insert the applicator, throw out the tablet and start with a new applicator.

    • Gently press the plunger to release the insert into the vagina.

    • The tablet will dissolve in the vagina.

    • Gently remove the applicator and throw it away.

  • Store Yuvafem applicators in their pouches at room temperature. Do not refrigerate.

What to do if you miss a dose of Yuvafem

  • Ask the prescriber how to manage missed doses.

  • Take only one dose daily. Do not take two doses on the same day to make up for a missed dose.

Yuvafem contraindications

  • Yuvafem should not be used by women who are pregnant or have:

    • Unusual vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor

    • A history of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack

    • Genetic conditions that increase the risk of blood clots

    • Have or have had uterine cancer

    • Have or have had certain types of breast cancer

    • Liver disease

    • Have had an allergic reaction to any ingredient in the formulation

Yuvafem warnings

  • Tell any healthcare provider or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using this medicine.

  • Estrogen replacement therapy requires follow-up doctor’s visits and blood tests. Keep all appointments.

  • Before starting Yuvafem, tell the prescriber if you have:

    • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

    • A bleeding disorder

    • Current or past cancer

    • A history of stroke or heart attack

    • Current or past blood clot problems

    • Heart problems

    • Liver problems

    • Kidney problems

    • Thyroid problems

    • Asthma

    • Epilepsy

    • Diabetes

    • Migraine

    • Lupus

    • Endometriosis

    • A hereditary disorder that causes face and throat swelling (hereditary angioedema)

  • When using Yuvafem, immediately inform the prescriber if you are:

    • Pregnant or think you’re pregnant

    • Breastfeeding

    • Planning to undergo surgery

  • Estradiol hormone replacement treatment increases the risk of:

    • Cancer of the uterine lining (when used alone)

    • Breast cancer

    • Heart attack

    • Stroke

    • Blood clots

    • Dementia

    • Gallbladder disease

  • Yuvafem can cause serious side effects including:

    • High calcium

    • Vision changes

    • Liver problems

    • High blood pressure

    • High blood sugar

    • Fluid retention

    • Fibroid enlargement in the uterus

  • Yuvafem can worsen certain pre-existing conditions in women including:

    • High calcium

    • High cholesterol and fats

    • Asthma

    • Diabetes

    • Migraine

    • Seizure disorders

    • Underactive thyroid

    • Endometriosis

    • Lupus

    • Porphyria 

  • Immediately stop taking Yuvafem and call a doctor if you experience any vision changes or loss of vision.

  • Vaginal inserts can cause cuts and other abrasions on the vaginal lining. Talk to the prescriber if this becomes a problem.

Yuvafem interactions

  • To avoid possible drug interactions, tell the prescribing healthcare provider about all the drugs and supplements regularly taken, particularly:

    • Other female hormones

    • Thyroid hormones

    • Carbamazepine, clarithromycin, erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, phenobarbital, rifampin, ritonavir

  • Tell other healthcare providers you are using this medicine before they prescribe new medications.

  • The estradiol in Yuvafem can alter the results of some important blood tests including thyroid, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood clotting tests.

Yuvafem side effects

Serious side effects

Report to a doctor any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect including:

  • Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause

  • Vaginal cuts or abrasions

  • Breast lumps, breast discharge, breast pain

  • Vision changes, partial or complete loss of vision

  • Severe chest pain, shortness of breath

  • Numbness or weakness in your arm or leg, pain in your chest or leg (calf), weakness, fatigue

  • Sudden or severe headaches, numbness or weakness (on one side of the body), trouble speaking, trouble walking

  • Memory loss, confusion, and disorientation

  • Swelling in your face, hands, ankles, or feet

  • Allergic reaction: Itching, hives, swelling in your face, lips, mouth, or throat, trouble breathing

Less serious side effects

  • Back pain

  • Vaginal itching

  • Vaginal yeast infection

  • Diarrhea
