Is there a generic of Zocor?

Zocor is a brand-name drug manufactured by Merck. The generic version of Zocor is simvastatin, which is manufactured by various companies, including Zydus, Lupin, and Accord.

What is Zocor?

Zocor is a prescription medication used to help lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides (fats) in the blood. It can also help raise HDL ("good") cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. Zocor belongs to a group of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, otherwise known as statins. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver.

Lowering LDL cholesterol and raising "good" cholesterol can help decrease the risk of complications from heart disease, such as strokes and heart attacks. For Zocor to be most effective, it should be used in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Before taking Zocor, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or a thyroid disorder. You should also tell your doctor if you are of Chinese descent, or if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily. These factors may affect how Zocor works for you.

Your doctor should also be informed if you are pregnant or become pregnant while using this. Zocor can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects and should not be used during pregnancy. Zocor is also not recommended in women who are breastfeeding.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided while taking Zocor as it may lead to potentially dangerous effects. Do not consume grapefruit products while taking this medication.

What are the side effects of Zocor?

Possible side effects of Zocor can include headache, constipation, nausea, stomach pain, and cold symptoms, such as a stuffy nose, sneezing, or sore throat.

In some rare cases, Zocor can cause a condition that causes a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, potentially leading to kidney failure. Contact your doctor right away if you notice that you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have a fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-colored urine.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
