What is the generic for NovoLog?

NovoLog is Novo Nordisk’s brand-name formulation of rapid-acting insulin. Its active ingredient is insulin aspart. Novo Nordisk previously sold an unbranded insulin aspart product equivalent to NovoLog, but the company discontinued its unbranded biologic insulins on Dec. 31, 2025.

There are, however, two lower-priced FDA-approved insulin aspart biosimilars to NovoLog:  Merilog (insulin aspart-szjj) and Kirsty (insulin aspart-xjhz). Kirsty is designated as interchangeable with NovoLog, meaning a pharmacist may be able to substitute it for NovoLog without a new prescription, depending on state law. Merilog does not have an interchangeable status and will require a new prescription from the healthcare provider.

A third biosimilar, Garzulys (insulin aspart-fsan), was approved in July 2026.

Other rapid-acting insulin options include Sanofi’s Admelog (insulin lispro) and Apidra (insulin glulisine), Eli Lilly’s Humalog (insulin lispro) and Lyumjev (insulin lispro-aabc), and Novo Nordisk’s Fiasp (insulin aspart).

Is NovoLog covered by insurance?

NovoLog may be covered by private insurance, Medicare Part D, and Medicaid, but coverage and copays vary by plan. Health insurance plans have their own deductibles, formularies, and preferred medications, so check your plan to confirm whether NovoLog is covered and what you may pay out of pocket.

In 2023, Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, and Sanofi announced significant reductions in the list prices and out-of-pocket costs of several insulin products. For people with Medicare, the Inflation Reduction Act limits the cost of each covered insulin product to no more than $35 for a one-month supply. NovoLog FlexPen, if covered by the plan, would generally be covered under Part D because Medicare Part B covers insulin used with certain covered insulin pumps rather than insulin administered with a pen. Out-of-pocket costs under Medicaid vary by state and eligibility.
