Shingrix is a brand-name vaccine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). There is no generic version of Shingrix currently available.
Shingrix is an FDA-approved shingles vaccine used to reduce the risk of shingles (herpes zoster). This is the same virus that causes chickenpox in children. If an individual has been infected with chickenpox in the past, herpes zoster can stay in the body's nerve roots and later become active. The reactivated virus causes shingles, which can cause symptoms such as a painful skin rash, blisters, and burning pain in the nerves and skin (postherpetic neuralgia).
The Shingrix vaccine works by exposing the body to a small dose of the inactive virus. This helps the body to develop an immunity to the varicella-zoster virus. It may be recommended in healthy adults 50 and older, including older adults who have previously received a live zoster vaccine (Zostavax). It's also recommended for adults 18 and older who may face a higher risk of shingles due to weakened immune systems from diseases or treatments.
Common side effects of Shingrix include:
Pain at the injection site
Redness and swelling at the injection site
Muscle pain
Fatigue
Headache
Shivering
Fever
Serious side effects are rare but may include severe allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, dizziness, weakness, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face and throat. In some cases, people may experience an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which may cause symptoms like muscle weakness, tingling in the extremities, difficulty walking, and sometimes even paralysis. In addition, Shingrix may cause fainting.
Contact your healthcare provider for medical advice and more information on adverse effects and other warnings, as this is not a complete list of side effects. Let your doctor know if you're allergic to any active or inactive ingredients in Shingrix.
The dosing schedule for Shingrix typically involves two separate doses. The initial dose is followed by a second dose administered two to six months later. For people who are immunocompromised, the second dose can be given one to two months after the first dose. It’s recommended to keep this timeline to ensure the vaccine is effective. Consult your healthcare provider if you have questions about the appropriate dosing schedule.
Shingrix and Zostavax are both vaccines for shingles, but Shingrix is newer and has been shown to provide stronger and longer-lasting protection. While Shingrix is a non-live vaccine requiring two doses, Zostavax is a live vaccine administered in a single dose. However, due to its lower efficacy, Zostavax was discontinued in the U.S. in November 2020, making Shingrix the preferred choice for shingles prevention.
The Shingrix vaccine provides strong protection against shingles for at least seven years after completing the two-dose series. Studies suggest its effectiveness may last even longer, but ongoing research is needed to confirm this.
