Sildenafil is a generic prescription medicine used to treat erection problems in men, or it can be used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. This medication belongs to the drug class known as phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors). Sildenafil works for ED by increasing blood flow to the penis, allowing a man to achieve and maintain an erection. Sildenafil works for PAH by relaxing blood vessels in the lungs.
Before taking Sildenafil, tell your doctor about any medical conditions, including heart problems, heart surgery, high or low blood pressure, blood cell problems, a deformed penis shape, retinitis pigmentosa (a rare genetic eye disease), or any history of vision loss. You should also mention any liver or kidney problems, bleeding problems, stomach ulcers, or any other medical conditions.
The most common form of Sildenafil comes in the form of an oral tablet and should be used exactly as instructed by your healthcare provider. Do not use this medication in excess or more frequently than recommended by your doctor. Using too much of this drug may cause an increased risk of side effects.
In the treatment of erectile dysfunction, Sildenafil is generally prescribed to be taken once as needed (as 25, 50, or 100 mg). To be most effective, Sildenafil should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before sexual stimulation. It should not be taken more than once a day, regardless of the milligrams.
If used for PAH, 20 mg of Sildenafil is usually prescribed to be taken three times a day. Each dose should be taken between four and six hours apart.
Common side effects of Sildenafil may include headaches, stomachaches, flushing, back pain, muscle pain, and dizziness. An erection that lasts longer than four hours is a serious side effect of Sildenafil that requires medical attention.
A sudden decrease in hearing, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears are rare but possible side effects of Sildenafil. These symptoms require emergency medical help.
Sildenafil may cause blurry vision or may cause you to see things with a blue-colored tinge. If you have sudden vision loss while taking Sildenafil, get emergency medical help, as this could be a sign of a serious condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
Contact your doctor or pharmacist for professional medical advice if you experience adverse effects of Sildenafil.
Engaging in sexual activity may put additional strain on your heart, especially if you currently suffer from heart issues. Stop and seek immediate medical assistance if you have heart-related issues and you experience Sildenafil side effects such as severe dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
