What is Arnuity Ellipta: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Arnuity Ellipta is a prescription inhalant that prevents asthma attacks. Its active ingredient is fluticasone furoate, a corticosteroid. Fluticasone improves breathing and minimizes asthma exacerbations by reducing airway inflammation. Arnuity Elllipta is a maintenance treatment. People on Arnuity Elllipta will still need to carry rescue inhalers for acute bronchospasms.

What is Arnuity Ellipta used for?

Arnuity Ellipta is a maintenance treatment for asthma in adults and children 5 years and older.

What are common Arnuity Ellipta doses?

  • For the maintenance treatment of asthma:

    • In adults and children, 12 years of age and older: one (1) actuation of 100 mcg or 200 mcg powder aerosol inhaled once daily

    • In children 5 to 11 years of age: one (1) actuation of 50 mcg powder aerosol inhaled once daily

How to take Arnuity Ellipta

  • Follow all the prescriber’s instructions. 

  • Take Arnuity doses at the same time each day.

  • Take only one inhalation daily. Do not use it more often than that.

  • Please read the Patient Information sheet and Instructions for Use with the medicine. 

  • Each inhaler comes with 30 doses. When first opened, the inhaler’s dose counter should read “30.”

  • To take a dose, open the cover of the inhaler all the way. It will click to signal a dose is ready to be taken. 

    • Do not close the cover until you have taken a dose. If you do, the dose will be lost.

  • Looking away from the inhaler, breathe out fully to get as much air out of the lungs as possible. 

  • Put the mouthpiece between your lips and close your lips firmly around it.

  • Do not cover the air vents with your fingers or hands. 

  • Take one long, steady, deep breath in through your mouth. 

  • Take your mouth off the mouthpiece and hold your breath for about three to four seconds.

  • Breathe out slowly and gently.

  • Close the inhaler. You can clean the mouthpiece using a dry tissue, but it’s not required.

  • When you have finished, rinse your mouth and spit out the water. Do not swallow the water.

  • When the inhaler dose counter reads “9,” it will show red in the margin. That means it’s time to refill the prescription.

  • Throw the empty inhaler away when the dose count reaches “0” or six weeks have passed since it was first opened.

  • Store the inhaler in a closed container at room temperature in a dry place protected from heat and light.

What to do if you miss a dose of Arnuity Ellipta

  • Take a dose as soon as you remember. 

  • If it’s the next day, skip the missed dose. 

  • Take the next dose at its regular time.

  • Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Arnuity Ellipta contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. 

  • Do not use it if you have had an allergic reaction to fluticasone.

  • Do not use it if you have severe allergies to milk proteins.

  • Never use Arnuity Ellipta to treat asthma attacks.

Arnuity Ellipta warnings

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using this medicine. 

  • The prescriber needs to visit with you and perform regular tests to monitor therapy. Keep all appointments.

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have:

    • Liver problems

    • Weak bones or bone density problems such as osteoporosis

    • Immune system problems

    • Eye problems, including glaucoma, high eye pressure, cataracts, or vision changes

    • Any viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasite infection

    • Milk protein allergies

  • Arnuity Ellipta can cause serious problems, including:

    • Increased risk of infection, including fungus infection in the mouth (thrush)

    • Adrenal gland dysfunction

    • Sudden difficulty breathing immediately after taking a dose

    • Bone thinning and osteoporosis

    • Eye problems, including glaucoma, increased eye pressure, or cataracts

    • Stunted growth (in children)

  • Do not use Arnuity Ellipta to manage asthma attacks. Always carry a rescue inhaler for acute asthma attacks. 

  • Call the doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

Arnuity Ellipta interactions

  • To avoid possible drug interactions, tell the prescribing healthcare provider about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you use, particularly:

  • Do not drink grapefruit juice when using Arnuity Ellipta.

  • Switching from oral corticosteroids to Arnuity Ellipta may cause steroid withdrawal symptoms. To prevent severe side effects, patients may need to restart taking oral corticosteroids again in times of stress or severe asthma episodes.

  • Tell other healthcare providers you are using this medicine before they prescribe new medications.

Serious side effects

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Worsening of asthma symptoms

  • Sudden difficulties breathing immediately after taking a dose

  • Vision changes, eye pain

  • Redness, sores, or white patches in your mouth or throat

  • Infection: fever, chills, productive cough, aches and pains, tiredness, nausea, vomiting 

  • Allergic reaction: Skin rash, skin redness, skin swelling, severe itching, swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, chest pain

Less serious side effects

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

  • Headache

  • Breathing problems

  • Flu
