Avodart is a prescription medication used in men to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by reducing the size of an enlarged prostate which relieves symptoms such as difficulty urinating, or the need to urinate frequently or urgently. It may also reduce the need for surgery to treat BPH. Avodart may be taken alone or in combination with Flomax (tamsulosin)—your doctor will decide which regimen is appropriate for you. This medication is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer. Read and follow the instructions in the Patient Information Leaflet provided with this medication before you start treatment. This medication comes in the form of an oral capsule that is usually taken once daily. The capsule should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food. Avodart capsules should not be handled by women who are pregnant or may be pregnant, as the medicine can be absorbed through the skin and can cause harm to an unborn baby. (For this reason, men should not donate blood while taking Avodart or for 6 months after the last dose—this prevents pregnant women from receiving Avodart through a blood transfusion.) Use this medication daily to experience the maximum effect. Try taking it at the same time every day to help yourself remember. It may take as much as three to six months of treatment with Avodart before you begin to experience any improvement in symptoms. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen.
Avodart may cause unwanted side effects such as decreased sexual interest, decrease in the production of semen, testicle pain or swelling, increased breast size, or breast tenderness. Sexual problems may continue even after treatment has stopped. Talk to your doctor if you experience any of these effects. Avodart may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing. Check with your doctor or healthcare professional for full medical advice and additional information on the risks and benefits involved with using Avodart as this is not a complete list of side effects.
