Proscar is a brand-name prescription drug that treats enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) and relieves urination problems due to an enlarged prostate. The active ingredient in Proscar is finasteride. Proscar may be prescribed alone or in combination with other medication for BPH.
Finasteride blocks a molecule in the body that converts testosterone into a more active form that causes prostate enlargement. This then relieves many of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as excessive urination or trouble urinating.
It can take up to six months for Proscar to reach its full effects on the common symptoms of BPH. Proscar should be taken at the same time each day, with a full glass of water.
Proscar is not appropriate for everyone. Before taking Proscar, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
Proscar should NEVER be taken by a woman or a child. Proscar can cause harm to an unborn baby. Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle broken Proscar tablets, because the medication can be absorbed through the skin.
While not a complete list, the most common side effects of Proscar are sexual problems resulting from lower levels of testosterone, such as decreased interest in sex, inability to have or keep an erection, impotence, and trouble having an orgasm. In some cases, sexual side effects persist after the use of Proscar has been discontinued. Common physical side effects also include dizziness, headache, and a runny nose.
Allergic reactions are very rare. Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling, require emergency medical care.
