Uroxatral is a brand-name prescription drug that treats urinary problems in men with an enlarged prostate due to an increase in the number of cells in the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH).
The active ingredient in Uroxatral, alfuzosin, belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers. It works by binding to alpha adrenergic receptors in the bladder neck and prostate, causing the smooth muscles in the lower urinary tract to relax. Relaxation of these muscles helps improve urine flow.
You should not take Uroxatral if you have liver problems, are allergic to any ingredients in Uroxatral, or taking certain medications called antifungals or anti-HIV drugs.
The most common side effects of Uroxatral include dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Other side effects may include stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, nausea, upper respiratory tract infections, and impotence.
Serious side effects of Uroxatral are rare but include priapism, or a painful erection that does not go away. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a persistent, painful erection. You should also seek medical attention if you experience signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, including hives, rash, swelling, or trouble breathing.
