Azulfidine is a brand-name prescription drug that reduces the inflammation (swelling) of ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly targets tissues in the colon as if they were an infection. The immune system response causes swelling and tissue damage (sores) along the inner lining of the colon and rectum. The active ingredient in Azulfidine, sulfasalazine, works by reducing this swelling and so reduces the symptoms–fever, diarrhea, bleeding, and pain–caused by the disease.
With rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system targets the lining of the joints, causing swelling, pain, and tissue damage. As with ulcerative colitis, sulfasalazine reduces swelling by preventing the production of a hormone that stimulates an inflammatory response.
Extended-release Azulfidine, also called Azulfidine EN-tabs, is also sometimes used, along with rest and other drugs, for rheumatoid arthritis when other prescription drugs have failed.
Azulfidine is taken in immediate-release or extended-release doses in tablet form. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor about all of the allergies and medical conditions you have. You should not take Azulfidine if you are allergic to sulfa drugs or NSAIDs like aspirin or if you have certain medical conditions such as intestinal or urinary blockage or porphyria. Tell your doctor about all of the medicines you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. This ensures your doctor can prescribe Azulfidine safely with your existing medical conditions and medications.
Although not a complete list, common side effects of Azulfidine include loss of appetite, headache, indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and lowered sperm count. Mood changes are less common and include insomnia and depression. Azulfidine may cause an orange/yellow discoloration of the skin and urine.
Allergic reactions to Azulfidine are rare but can be life-threatening or fatal. Symptoms may include rashes, hives, fever, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and swelling around the face. Seek emergency medical attention if you have signs of an allergic reaction. Skin reactions may occur—get emergency medical help right away if you have burning eyes, skin pain, or a red or purple rash with blistering or peeling skin. Report side effects to your doctor. Before taking Azulfidine, read the Medication Guide, which has important information and warnings.
Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for any additional information and medical advice before taking Azulfidine.
